The Food and Beverage product(s) you hope to sell will be at the heart of your business plan. What is equally important is how you label your products.
It is essential to provide food information to customers that will allow them to make informed choices and make safe use of food.
If you produce prepacked food, then you must include a label detailing the energy and values of nutrients (fats, carbohydrates, sugar, salt etc) levels.
Did you know that there are currently 14 allergens that must be declared on the label?
Free From’ is an increasing marketplace that producers are keen to access. If you wish to use a 'free-from' label for your products they have to be independently certified (tested) to specific and rigorous limits. This includes testing that the final product does not contain the listed ingredients/allergens and that cross-contamination from other foods made on-site is prevented.
We recommend you visit the Food Standards Agency website to learn about allergens. You can also find more detailed information on labelling on the Food Standards Agency site.
The Food Standards Agency has helpful guidance on Food Information Regulations for food business operators, which you can read more of here.
