Financial & Business Services

Fife is a major hub for financial and related professional services

Fife, located in the heart of Scotland, boasts a thriving financial and business services sector. With a rich history dating back to the establishment of The Fife Banking Company in 1802, Fife has evolved into a modern hub for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Shared Services.

Fife’s shared services centres are a cornerstone of the local economy, employing nearly 5,000 people and contributing approximately £500 million annually. The presence of major companies such as Ingenico Group and Paysend highlights Fife’s appeal to significant industry players. Additionally, innovative local companies like Singula Decisions add to the dynamic business environment, fostering a culture of creativity and growth.

The Pitreavie Business Park and Carnegie Campus in Dunfermline stand out as the largest single centre for financial shared services in Scotland. The high value-add of the shared services sector, with £103,000 per full-time equivalent (FTE), is one of the highest in Scotland, reflecting the sector’s efficiency and productivity.

Despite facing ongoing challenges, Fife’s business sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Between March 2023 and March 2024, turnover from Fife's businesses rose by over 23% and the number of 'high growth' businesses grew to the highest number recorded. This growth is a testament to the adaptability and strength of Fife’s business community, which continues to thrive and contribute significantly to the local economy.

Fife - Scotland’s Payments Capital

Within the Fintech Scotland ecosystem, Fife plays a crucial role, particularly in the payments sector. Payments is the leading category in fintech investment worldwide, and Fife has earned the title of Scotland’s Payments Capital. The region’s contributions to digital payments and transfer systems are rooted in entrepreneurial innovation that originated from the electronics industry. Companies like Fortronic and Level 4 Software laid the foundations for the payment industry, and their legacy continues to influence the sector today.

Ingenico has a significant presence in Fife, employing around 400 people at its premises in Dalgety Bay. The company traces its history back to 1972 as Fortronic, which developed the first automated counter terminals for Clydesdale Bank in 1977. Ingenico acquired Fortronic's payments terminals business in 1999 and has since become a global leader in seamless payment solutions.

Ingenico's role in Fife's fintech ecosystem is substantial, contributing to the region's reputation as a hub for digital payments and financial technology.

Fife’s fintech cluster has achieved global reach through mergers and acquisitions, which have recognised and maintained the region’s pool of skills and experience. This has solidified Fife’s reputation as a hub for payment technology and innovation.

Fintech Scotland

Fintech Scotland was established in 2018 with the mission to foster innovation and collaboration within Scotland’s financial technology sector. This collaborative approach aims to create a robust and dynamic fintech ecosystem.

Leveraging Scotland’s strengths in data, artificial intelligence (AI), and financial services, Fintech Scotland’s efforts are focused on driving innovation, supporting startups, and fostering a culture of collaboration and growth within the financial technology sector.
