Fife Council’s Economic Development team, through its Culture of Enterprise initiative, proudly congratulates the students of Kirkcaldy High School on their outstanding victory in the Regional Final of the 2025 RTX Quadcopter Challenge (Local Heroes), hosted at their own school.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the RTX Quadcopter Challenge—an initiative supported by Culture of Enterprise—which brought together talented students from Kirkcaldy High School and Levenmouth Academy. Working in teams, participants designed and built quadcopters under the guidance of Raytheon UK STEM Ambassadors.
As part of the competition, students presented their designs, discussed cost considerations, and demonstrated teamwork and problem-solving skills to a judging panel featuring representatives from Raytheon UK, Fife Council, and Pepsico (Quaker Oats). The event culminated in a high-stakes obstacle course, where teams showcased their quadcopters’ flying capabilities and real-world applications.
Dot Smith, Enterprise and Business Development Manager at Fife Council, reflected on the event’s significance:
“Programmes like the RTX Quadcopter Challenge play a vital role in fostering a culture of enterprise while developing STEM awareness and skills among young people. Our sincere congratulations go to Team SAS of Kirkcaldy High School—we wish them the very best in the National Final! The judges were incredibly impressed with the quality of presentations and designs this year, and we extend our thanks to everyone who supported the event.”
Olivia Ewan, Test Development Engineer & STEM Site Lead for Raytheon Glenrothes said:
“The quality of work submitted to this years RTX Quadcopter Challenge certainly lived up to our 10th Anniversary! All participating students displayed confidence presenting their ideas, innovation in their unique designs and passion towards researching how drones could potentially be used in the future to aid a variety of local heroes. It is always a pleasure to see the enthusiasm the young people bring to the challenge and our team at Raytheon are thrilled to hear many talking about considering careers in STEM fields after participating. The support we receive from Fife Council year on year also does not go unnoticed, their engagement with schools and participation on the day help to make programmes like ours a success. Congratulations to team SAS on making it through to the final stage and good luck!”
Team SAS will now advance to the National Final in Central London, proudly representing their school and showcasing their impressive engineering and innovation skills.
