Speaking ahead of his visit, Mr Murray said:
“Businesses in Fife, and right across Scotland, are set to get a trade windfall thanks to the UK Government’s new International Trade Strategy. “I’m really looking forward to visiting St Andrews today to hear more about the University’s Eden Campus, Eden Mill’s expansion plans, and the work of The R&A and the St Andrews Links Trust to drive the growth of golf as a key pillar of Scotland’s tourism and events sector.”
The University of St Andrews’ Eden Campus aims to create a global research and innovation hub focused on sustainability and low-carbon solutions. It received a £24.5 million investment from the UK Government as part of the Tay Cities Region Deal.
Eden Mill’s new distillery at the University of St Andrews’ Eden Campus became operational in April this year and is now producing both single malt whisky and gin on-site. Their visitor centre will open its doors to the public in August.
Research on behalf of the St Andrews Links Trust shows that golf visitors support 1,686 fulltime jobs in St Andrews, and 4,345 across Scotland. For every £1 that is spent on golf, an additional £3.43 is generated for other businesses in St Andrews. More than 100,000 visitors a year play on St Andrews Links, 91% from outside Scotland, with 78% visiting specifically for golf.
