Defence Ready Programme: Helping Fife SMEs Win Defence Supply Chain Contracts

InvestFife news

January 20, 2026
Sectors:

With the UK Government committed to increasing defence spending to 2.36% of GDP (an additional £2.2 billion) by 2027, opportunities for SMEs in the defence supply chain are expanding rapidly.

To help local businesses take advantage of this growth, Fife Council’s Economic Development Team, in partnership with Make UK Defence, successfully delivered the Defence Ready Programme in 2025.

The Defence Ready Programme was designed for Fife businesses with ambitions to enter the defence sector, as well as companies already operating in the market and looking to increase their market share. The programme provided tailored support, specialist advice and valuable connections to help SMEs become fit to bid for, and win, defence contracts in both domestic and international markets.

What is the Defence Ready Programme?

The Defence Ready Programme offered a comprehensive package of support to help SMEs understand defence procurement requirements, improve readiness, and strengthen their route to market. Support included:

  • An initial in-person workshop at MOD Caledonia
  • Individual business health checks, with bespoke action plans
  • Ongoing specialist guidance and sector insight
  • A dedicated learning journey to DSEI (September 2025), providing direct exposure to global defence decision-makers
  • Support to access major industry exhibitions, including DPRTE and the Farnborough Air Show

Connecting Fife SMEs with Defence Supply Chain Opportunities

A key element of the programme was the Fife Defence Supplier Event, held in June 2025, which connected SMEs with prime contractors and Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, creating opportunities for collaboration and supply-chain engagement.

The event helped position Fife as an active contributor within the wider defence ecosystem, supporting business growth through stronger relationships and direct market access.

Why the Defence Ready Programme Matters

The Defence Ready Programme was more than a series of workshops and events. It represented a strategic investment in Fife’s economic future.

By equipping local SMEs with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the complex defence sector, the programme has opened doors to lucrative contracts, strengthened capability, and supported long-term growth opportunities in a high-value market.

Defence Ready Programme Impact and Success

Over the course of the programme, 13 businesses benefited from tailored support and direct engagement with industry leaders. Participants reported a significant increase in sector knowledge, with many identifying new opportunities and forming valuable connections.

Several companies have already seen tangible outcomes, including businesses securing new customers as a direct result of attending DSEI. Others reported increased clarity around defence procurement processes and greater confidence to pursue contract opportunities.

The DSEI learning journey delegation also generated more than 40 enquiries, demonstrating the value of supporting Fife businesses to engage with high-growth sectors such as defence.

In addition, over 100 delegates from Fife, across the UK and internationally attended the Fife Defence Supplier Event on 3 June 2025. The event brought together major industry players, government representatives and suppliers for a day of sector presentations, one-to-one meetings and networking, reinforcing Fife’s reputation as a hub for defence collaboration.

Commenting on the programme, one participant said:

“The event at MOD Caledonia Naval Base was very helpful with good links and information on up and coming projects. We picked up two new customers as a direct result of the trip to DSEI.”

What’s Next for the Defence Ready Programme?

Building on this success, Fife Council will continue to champion local businesses through future learning journeys to DPRTE 2026 and the Farnborough Air Show 2026, ensuring SMEs remain competitive in this high-growth sector.

Additional support will also be available through Fife’s Trade Development Programme, helping businesses increase sales and brand awareness in defence and other key sectors, supporting expansion into new markets and strengthening global presence.

Planning is also underway for an even larger Fife Defence Supplier Event in 2026, showcasing opportunities across the defence supply chain and reinforcing Fife’s position as a hub for innovation and collaboration in this critical industry.

Funding

The Defence Ready Programme has received £28,080.30 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
