A Collaborative Space for Innovation in Manufacturing
Leaders from the manufacturing industry, engineers, university researchers, and community representatives gathered for Imagining the Future of Manufacturing, an interactive workshop designed to identify joint projects that will enhance manufacturing processes, systems, and products to keep the sector competitive, drive innovation and collaboration. The event hosted in partnership with St Andrews Innovation and Fife Council’s Economic Development Team, provided a space for key stake holders to share knowledge and develop solutions.
The Inception of the Event
Inspired by an NHS Fife innovation workshop, the event was developed by Bonnie Hacking (University of St Andrews Entrepreneurship Centre) and Ross Waite (Fife Council) to create a space where industry and academia could tackle real-world challenges.
"The best ideas often come from open conversations between people with different perspectives. By working together, we can drive real change in manufacturing and help shape the future of the sector," said Derek Warson, CEO at St Andrews Innovation.
Pamela Stevenson, Service Manager for Economic Development at Fife Council, added, “Bringing industry, universities, and the public sector together is key to driving innovation and supporting economic growth in Fife.”
Workshop Structure and Discussions
The workshop used the World Café methodology to encourage discussion on key industry challenges. Participants explored ways to modernise outdated equipment, leverage AI and automation, bridge skills gaps, and improve sustainability. As a result, two key projects will now move forward: making outdated equipment more efficient and inspiring the next generation to join the manufacturing industry. Further sessions will refine these projects, establish dedicated teams, and explore funding opportunities to drive long-term impact.
The event concluded with a tour of the Rapid Prototyping Centre and Eden Campus, giving attendees a first-hand look at advanced manufacturing technologies and facilities that can support future collaborations.
Imagining the Future of Manufacturing has laid the foundation for a new era of collaboration and innovation, ensuring that the UK’s manufacturing sector remains agile, forward-thinking, and resilient in the face of evolving challenges.
