Popular Homemade Cheesecake is a delight in Fife

InvestFife news

November 3, 2021
Sectors:
Starting up in business with a small café and a soft play area was always the dream for husband and wife partnership, Maighan and Ewen Brand. They achieved that in May 2016 when they opened Coloured Café in Rosyth, and instantly the family café was a huge hit–as was Maighan’s cheesecake! Before long, they were selling 2,000 slices of cheesecake a month.
Ewen Brand explains:
“We quickly realised that the popularity of Maighan’s cheesecake was an avenue worth exploring, and so set up a cheesecake manufacturing side to the business, initially selling whole cheesecakes to cafés in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Then the pandemic hit, and the café was closed, so we focused on manufacturing cheesecakes. We quickly went from making 100 cheesecakes a week to over 2,000 cheesecakes a month–all from our kitchen at home!”
The need for office premises became urgent, and in September, the now new business, The Yellow Cheesecake Company, secured a lease on a 1,000 sq. ft. facility in Pitreavie Business Park, Dunfermline from Fife Council’s Economic Development Team. It will also be a base from which the business can grow and add to its team of six staff.
Such a ‘leap’ doesn’t come without its challenges or uncertainties, but fortunately for Ewen and Maighan, they’ve had the support of Business Gateway Fife Adviser, Lynne Baillie.
Ewen added:
“We’ve had great support from Lynne Baillie at Business Gateway Fife. She secured Expert Help to support the creation of a bespoke marketing strategy for the cheesecake manufacturing side of the business, which, combined with a Digital Boost Development Grant to upgrade our website, and help to attain the food safety SALSA accreditation, we’ve been able to hit the ground running.”
