NMIS & Institute of Photonics - Introduction to lasers: science, technologies, capabilities, applications

May 25, 2021, 09.00 – 14.00

Lasers and photonics are pivotal within modern businesses, from the lasers used in additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, to the photonic devices that provide increased efficiency in robotic and autonomous systems.

In this introductory pre-recorded webinar, you will learn about the concept of light and how it is generated and controlled to enable a wide range of technologies. We will also take you through the historical development of the laser providing background on the different types that currently exist.

A guided tour of a laser resonator will introduce each of the important laser elements and describe the principles of laser operation, including key concepts such as population inversion, stimulated emission, gain, and optical feedback.

Special laser characteristics, including pulsed and narrow line-width lasers will also be explained, along with their applications. The session will conclude with an interactive live Q&A and discussion session.
