Importing goods and supplies from around the world can give your business a competitive edge in your domestic market or make your production costs more cost-effective. However, negotiating the international marketplace can be complicated and created challenges for the inexperienced operator.
This workshop considers the basic procedures, terminology and documentation involved in importing, giving you the knowledge needed to trade with confidence.

Understanding the contract – essential points that will reduce problems;
Incoterms 2020 – the importance of getting them right
The rules relating to origin and why they can the origin affect an importer’s costs;
Trading with the European Community;
What happens when goods arrive in the UK;
The importance of tariff classification of goods (commodity code numbers);
Understanding Customs Procedure Codes (CPC’s);
Working with HM Revenue & Customs;
Understand the valuation rules - what is included in the value for duty and VAT payments;
Obtaining relief from duty payments;
Paying for materials – how to minimise buyer risk.

This event is part of a Programme of Workshops and Training being delivered under the InvestFife brand, incorporating all of Fife Council’s Economic Development services, which in partnership with Business Gateway Fife, Fife Chamber of Commerce and Scottish Development International aims to support businesses in Fife.
