CuanTec begins manufacture of its Chrystal® Chitosan range of high quality, highly traceable, high specification Chitosan as powders, solution, or granules. These products are characterised by a combination of very high levels of viscosity, combined with very high levels of Deacetylation, together with industry-leading levels of traceability and positive environmental impact. This Chitosan is designed for use in advanced biomedical, dental, and veterinary products, where its unique therapeutic properties can improve, or ultimately, save lives. The Chitosan is also widely used in other categories such as water purification and food and beverage.
CuanTec’s range of Chrystal® Chitosan products are tailored to meet customers’ full set of technical, quality, and environmental needs. CuanTec is delighted to announce that it is now producing Chitosan with a Degree of Deacetylation of 89% and a Viscosity of 1,850-2,000 Centrepoises. CuanTec also has the ability to “dial up and down” the levels of Deacetylation and Viscosity as required by customers.
Product specification is not enough. CuanTec has been working very hard with its suppliers to ensure a very high level of traceability. With the feedstock coming from UK-government controlled coastal waters and being processed in Scotland, UK, customers can be confident about a short and reliable supply chain and a very high level of traceability and provenance. There is also an environmental contribution: the feedstock is the raw shell byproduct from the shellfish industry. Previously this was generally burnt or sent to landfill—now it is upcycled into a valuable ingredient for the biomedical and associated categories to save and improve lives.
Rupert Maitland-Titterton, CEO, commented: “Designing and producing products against very high specification standards, to the highest quality, with the highest degree of traceability, and with a beneficial environmental footprint, has been a total team effort. And these Chitosan-based products will improve, and ultimately save, lives.”
Giles Redpath, CEO, Hive Energy, said: “Hive has been honoured to work with this exciting technology, born out of a Scottish University and the excellent brains at CuanTec. Taking shellfish waste from landfill to create high-value medical products, as well as food packaging, is a truly exciting step forward in our mission towards a circular economy."
Pamela Stevenson, Service Manager of Economic Development, shared her enthusiasm by stating, “We are delighted to have offered Invest Fife support to CuanTec as they establish their presence in Fife. This brings promising news regarding the commencement of production at the manufacturing facility located in Glenrothes, underscoring the creation of valuable job opportunities within the region.”
