After seven years of scientific development, the Scottish bioscience company, CuanTec, has begun producing high-quality, high-specification Chitosan at its manufacturing plant in Glenrothes. Chitosan is a speciality product widely used in the biomedical and medical sectors due to its unique therapeutic properties (anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and haemostatic- rapidly stopping blood-loss) as well as in other sectors like water-purification, dental, cosmetic, agriculture and cutting-edge university research - all from raw shell left over from the shell-fish industry!
APPROACH
Having outgrown their R&D premises in Oban, CuanTec chose Fife for their main production base. The move to Fife was supported by Fife Council Economic Development (Invest Fife), Business Gateway Fife, Skills Development Scotland, and Scottish Enterprise. This relocation has created eight green jobs and includes plans for long-term expansion and additional local job opportunities.
Their environmentally friendly solution upcycles the byproduct from the shellfish/fisheries industry (“raw shell” from the shrimp) into a very valuable product. The company's important goals include reducing carbon emissions and reducing the environmental “load” of the shell byproduct, which is often disposed of, but most importantly making a product which will benefit society as it can save lives through its medical and biomedical applications.
CuanTec is committed to building a sustainable circular economy, creating valuable bioscience-based jobs, becoming carbon-negative and helping society achieve collective Net Zero goals.
Why Fife?
“Fife was our preferred location due to its central position, excellent supply chain connections, access to skilled employee base of engineers, chemists and commercial experts, its central position for its inputs and finally its proximity to major road networks. The support we received from Scottish Enterprise and Invest Fife is exceptional. Not only do they provide ongoing business access and advice, but they have helped us find the perfect premises and provided invaluable advice and assistance with funding, which enabled us to install a green, energy-efficient electric boiler for our production processes. We see ourselves as a truly Scottish company and want to play our part in Scotland’s journey to Net Zero. We eagerly anticipate future innovative business opportunities with the teams in Fife.”

NEXT STEPS
Supported by its investors, led by the Scottish Government, Hive Energy Ltd and Founders Factory, CuanTec has already achieved internationally recognised levels of business practice, which will build their trust in products and processes worldwide, especially after recently being awarded ISO Accreditation. CuanTec is ambitious to grow and looks forward to expanding its manufacturing footprint in the next few years.
